School Counselling

School Counsellor
Susan MacDonald, BSc., Bed., Med. Counselling
Counselling services can often support students with life experiences that impact their ability to perform to their potential. This service will be provided by the School Counsellor. Conversations between the student and the School Counsellor are confidential.
The goal of all counselling services is to promote student well-being and healthy communication between the student and the significant individuals in their lives. It is important to understand that counselling services are voluntary. Counselling services may include but are not limited to:
• Individual Counselling
• Group Counselling
• Consultation with school staff and the Site-based Team as necessary
• Referral to and/or consultation with outside agencies
• Behavioural Observations

As part of my duties and responsibilities I am required to keep counselling notes. Counselling notes are brief and are intended to assist the counsellor in supporting the student. The notes are kept in TIENET, through PowerSchool on-line, which only the current counsellor is able to access. However, if your child attends another Nova Scotia school, permission for the receiving School Guidance Counsellor to access the notes is required.
